PRE-HISTORIC FURNACES

The furnace was the place for ore treatment to obtain metals as pure as possible for those ages. Furnaces from "Cova dos Mouros" were very similar to the pre historic Belgian furnaces for iron ore treatment, as shown in the figure. They are about one meter high and with a rectangular opening on their bottom. That opening for natural air circulation was usually placed towards the predominant wind direction.
